This man, Williams, was the husband of Sally Fischer, a woman who took deep affront at the thought that her husband had an affair with a ‘witch.’ Her ancestor, the Roman Emperor Augustus, felt that all forms of paganism was a sin, thus he started the order of ‘Puritan’ in his family; any who married in must be of Roman blood and Faith – a feat that ensures the bloodline would be one of power and reverence. Isabelle, pregnant, flees Salem, eventually finding herself alone and in danger in the mountains of Connecticut. This could have been the end of her story, but she was found by the American Indian Pequoan tribe. They took her in and nursed her back to health, encouraged by the Tribes Medicine man who saw an important future for Isabelle in the smoke. The protection of the tribe is well warranted as soon it is revealed that the jealous wife of Isabelle’s love is bent on exterminating the mixed blood their affair has spawned. Her rage and jealousy inspire her to train her son as a hunter, creating the first Venator, and sparking the generations’ long battle that Elena is thrust into.
Armed with the Kuthun, her protector and pet dog Magi, her talented family, friends and the spunky ghost of her Grandmother, Elena must navigate treacherous waters while learning who and what she is. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. It's very well written with great characters and a fast-paced story. If you like books about magic and adventure, you'll like this book.
I'm not really sure why I didn't give this the full five stars, but I didn't. The concept is relatively new and the characters are fresh enough, but there's just something missing.
The story drags for about the first sixty percent of the book. The dramatic scenes lacked excitement for the most part. I think this is due to the story being totally 'told' rather than 'shown' which left me with the protagonist outside the experience. It lacks credibility in most of the aspects, I'm sorry to say. The characters were well developed.
I began this book with reservations, but quickly replaced all hesitancy with an eagerness for the next page. The love between Ellie, Magi, and her family and friends was obvious, and while a piece of this read like Indiana Jones, it was well written and tied everything together nicely. The ending was as it should be and yet I hope there is a future book, maybe about Ellie in her 20's.
Absolutely loved this book! I feel like this could be the next big book series like Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent etc. The Kuthun doesn't just follow the typical storyline of falling in love and then finding out about some crazy supernatural being which I also appreciated. Elena has grown up knowing about her family of witches, and is such a strong female character as we get to watch her grow up. The Kuthun is an ancient charm that allows her to learn about the past, and now it's up to her to learn the truth. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't recommend it enough--will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
The Kuthun is a thrilling and enchanting story of a young woman’s journey through her gifts and the challenges they bring. Author S. A. Carter draws you deep into her world with vivid imagery, engaging dialogue and incredible characters. Elena is a beautiful character that is easy to attach to and root for. As a coming of age witch, Elena’s life is complicated. It becomes even more complicated when she is given a special charm for her 16th birthday. With Venators trying to destroy her and a past to set straight this makes for a fast paced and thrilling read. It is full of humor, family, love, challenges, suspense, mystery, surprising twists, and hope. I highly recommend it!
I adore YA novels and particularly anything fantasy-related. Author S.A. Carter has given us a fantastic story with her coming of age adventure in "The Kuthun". The story of Elena, who is a sixteen year old witch and receives a magical charm for her birthday. This allows her to travel back in time and explore her family's roots, which are pretty tragic. Landing in such places as Salem, Mass. and ancient Egypt, Elena learns much about herself as she becomes embroiled in some dangerous situations. This was a fantastic read that I found to be very well-written, unique and engaging. Definitely recommend.
